CISM ORIENTATION: Understanding the Basics of Crisis Intervention Strategies

Course Description: Understanding and using Critical Incident Stress Management is an important aspect of school or business crisis planning. CISM represents an integrated, comprehensive, multi-component crisis intervention program. Its comprehensive nature gives it flexibility to be applied to a wide range of settings and constituent groups. This crisis intervention system is useful in schools, businesses and industry, as well as in public safety and mass disaster applications. The 3-hour orientation course will provide an overview of the CISM program. It will help the attendee know what to expect and how to work with crisis workers responding to the crisis situation. The course will identify the various modes of intervention, spanning from pre-crisis to post-crisis. It will provide information on what defines a critical incident as well as the signs and symptoms of critical incident stress. Additionally, the research, which demonstrates the efficacy of the CISM program in response to critical incidents, will be reviewed. This is an orientation course only, additional ICISF requirements are needed for one to be certified to implement or utilize these CISM tools. Participants will be able to:

About the Trainer: Rod Ogilvie LCPC, CRADC, is the Director of Crisis Management Services & Training for Associates in Professional Counseling. He is an allied staff member for Linden Oaks Hospital at Edward, and has helped them develop direct clinical services focusing on integrating spirituality and faith into treatment. Prior to working for APC, Rod worked for 10 years in hospital based treatment programs in the Chicagoland area. He has provided trainings and seminars on numerous topics to schools, churches, professionals, and retreat groups. He has been involved in numerous critical incident situations involving suicide, accidental deaths, abuse, robberies and other situations where CISM strategies were implemented. He also has provided crisis intervention services connected with 9/11 and hurricane Katrina.

Mr. Ogilvie obtained his Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology from Wheaton College Graduate School in 1990. He is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor as well as a certified addictions counselor. He has completed Advanced Training in Critical Incident Stress Management through the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation.

Continuing Education Hours: This program is recognized as providing 3 CEU's for: LPC/LCPC, LSW/LCSW.
