From Punk to EMO: Adolescent Counter Cultures

Course Description: Clothing, music, feelings and relationships make up the world of the average teenager. Trends have come and gone with every generation, but when these interests become obsessions and are linked to an ideology, there is a definite danger.? This course will address specific counter cultures, as well as help define specific signs to help identify when they can become harmful.

Attendees will:

Identify counter cultures of punk, industrial, gothic, and vampirism.
Listen to music of each counter culture for better understanding of the impact of the lyrics.
Identify when counter culture interests are really dangerous obsessions.

About the Trainer: Charla Waxman, MBA, Ed. D. has worked with adolescents for more than twenty five years. She has received the Milton Thrasher Award twice from the National Gang Crime Research Center for her work with gang members. She is published in the areas of gangs, anger management, adolescent behavior and the history of mental health. As Director of Business Development at Linden Oaks at Edward, Charla provides countless presentations on mental health and adolescent issues.
